The introduction of robots into our daily lives has created new challenges for autonomous robots: adapting to the existence of humans in the same environment and interacting with them has given rise to a new research field called Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), where the robot is considered as a partner rather than a tool. This survey provides a structured overview of current research on HRI. A detailed taxonomy of this research axes is presented, highlighting contemporary work in verbal and non-verbal interaction, emotional expression, intention recognition, social navigation, and human perception. For each axis, we discuss seminal works, prevailing methodologies, and open challenges.
