The Internet of Things (IoT) has revolutionized various industries, and satellite communication has emerged as a promising solution to extend IoT connectivity to remote and underserved areas. However, ensuring reliable and efficient IoT performance over satellite networks presents several challenges, including
long propagation delays, signal attenuation, and interference. Link budget analysis is a crucial tool for assessing the performance of satellite communication systems and identifying potential bottlenecks. This paper delves into the significance of link budget analysis in optimizing IoT performance over satellite networks. We discuss the key components of a link budget, such as transmit power, antenna gain, propagation losses, and receiver sensitivity. Furthermore, we explore how link budget analysis can be used to identify factors limiting system performance and to propose solutions for improvement. By carefully analysing the link budget, engineers can identify the optimal combination of hardware components, modulation schemes, and error correction codes to achieve the desired level of performance. Moreover, link budget analysis can help in selecting appropriate satellite orbits and frequencies to minimize interference and maximize signal strength. In conclusion, link budget analysis is an indispensable tool for designing and optimizing IoT systems over satellite networks. By carefully considering the various factors that affect signal propagation and by employing appropriate techniques, it is possible to achieve reliable and efficient IOT connectivity in even the most challenging environments.
